THE CISTERCIAN ROUTE

The Cistercian experience will take in three monasteries: Santes Creus, Poblet and Vallbona de les Monges. All three were built by monks of the Cistercian Order in the 12th century, developing churches, chapels, villages and farmland in the surrounding area.

These monasteries are especially charming, and this experience is an opportunity to see their similarities and differences, their distinctive art, and how each new century has transformed their architecture. These spaces speak to us in the silence, and centuries after they were built, we can contemplate the unique talent of the anonymous artists who gave these masterpieces to us.

Monks no-longer live in Santes Creus. It offers us its peace and serenity in a unique spot, the relaxing music of its fountains, and the magic of its columns...

Poblet, with an active community of monks, opens its doors and allows us to contemplate its beauty and the daily life of a community that has survived for centuries.

And finally, Vallbona de les Monges, a monastery inhabited by nuns. The actual care of the spaces, its organically farmed lands, its flowers and scenery bring us a unique feminine point of view in contemplating the architectural beauty of this monastery.

This trip will always offer 2 monasteries, Poblet and Santes Creus, due to the reduced opening hours of Vallbona de les Monges (which is only open at weekends), we offer you 2 options.

We understand that while some people are interested in visiting monasteries, too many can be tiring, so we also offer an alternative experience that replaces a monastery for a visit to the Caves de l'Espluga or Montblanc.

THE CISTERCIAN ROUTE: VILLAGES AND HISTORY

What will we do?

Our experience will begin in Santes Creus, with a visit to its monastery, admiring its beauty. We will continue down the road, weaving through farmlands, olive groves, vineyards and picturesque villages until we arrive in l’Espluga de Francoli, a village famous for its history, from its prehistoric inhabitants to its old use, as a hunting spot for the Royal family. We will visit the caves of l’Espluga, a window into the past, inhabited during the Middle Paleolithic era.

After tasting the best of our local gastronomy for lunch, we will go to Poblet, an unmissable monastery that offers up its past and its present.

Winding through farmland we will arrive at the stunning town of Montblanc, the most significant city of la Conca de Barberà. This medieval village was declared part of the Monumental and Artistic Group in 1947. We will take time to meander through its ancient streets and contemplate some of its points of interest.

THE CISTERCIAN ROUTE: MONASTERIES

What will we do?

Our experience will begin in Vallbona de les Monges, the women’s cistercian monastery, founded in the 12th century. During the visit we will see how the centuries have modeled and changed the monastery, in relation to the architectural styles of the time and the fascinating relationship between art and religion.

From there, we will drive down to Montblanc, medieval city and capital of la Conca de Barberà, where we will have time to wander freely through the historical city centre and enjoy a meal in one of its typical restaurants.

Once satisfied, Poblet monastery will be waiting for us, grand and sublime, the most famous of the three monasteries that form the Cistercian Route. The monastery of Poblet, still inhabited by monks, shows us a part of its history through its architecture and art... We will be able to visit the tombs of very important kings like James I The conquester and Peter the Cerimonious.

From there, and already with a good understanding of the Cistercian communities of the time, we arrive in Santes Creus. The visit to the monastery is sure to leave an impression on you. Its beauty and serenity have to be seen to be believed and the visit will give an idea of how people used to live here. For us, this monastery is the jewel of this experience, because of its truly special atmosphere.
